Mindfulness, yoga, procrastination…and irony

It’s because of mindfulness that I have become quiet adept, at confessing things I wouldn’t normally confess…like…ahem…I find it a challenge to stay focused…the irony.

This is because I find I am easily distracted, and it usually happens when I am doing research (“I’ll take five minutes to look at this website quickly”) and then suddenly I am sucked into the giant rabbit hole of the internet. I already feel I am starting to earn a qualification in procrastination…. something writers are especially good at.

Being Zen with kids? You must be joking!

I have to confess children and mindfulness do not tend to work in harmony together. In fact it is often a challenge just to be…well…normal.

So even though I am a yoga teacher, I still find being mindful (i.e. living in the moment and observing thoughts and feelings from a distance) somewhat challenging. I am fully aware that the opposite of being mindful is living in the past and thinking about the future (i.e. shrouded in your own personal fiction), but sometimes, I rather like living in fiction.

Self-Love Through Yoga and Meditation

Valentine’s Day is often associated as a time where lovers express their love for each other, a time where stores get filled with chocolates, teddy bears, and roses. However, Valentine’s Day is not only about showing love to others, but a time to focus on self-love. Learning to love yourself is key to accepting who you are and building self confidence as body image and self esteem issues continue to be a constant battle for both men and women alike.

V-Day a major time to separate…. break-up yoga anyone?

It strikes me as a touch harsh that Valentine’s Day is a major time for ending a relationship. But (apparently) back bends and forward facing postures provides the answer in easing the emotional distress following a break-up. Now I may be a touch cynical here, but I am left wondering if people really would be saying; “You know what? I’m over you now…thanks to Downward-Facing Dog.”

The most overused phrase of our time is…”I am too busy”

Why has saying “I’m too busy” become so dramatic? I’ve lost track of the texts or emails which declare several different ways of saying it (I counted 30 so far but I’m sure there are more). We now have a succession of phrases such as; running around like a headless chicken, head full of steam, I’m buried, too much on my plate, don’t know if I’m coming or going and; I’m up to my eyes. Indeed, the word ‘busy’ comes with its own portable stage.

An Online Parody of the Yoga World…About time!

Watching the satirical online series Namaste Bitches, a parody of the yoga world, reminds me of my own experience as a teacher, namely training as one. On my first day my teacher said something I will never forget; “Everybody leave your egos outside the room…there’s only room for one ego in here…mine”. That was just the start of the many things she had to say about ‘her ego’ and to ensure our egos stayed in its rightful place…i.e. outside the room. That set a precedent on how I viewed the yoga industry. So this series (albeit tongue-in-cheek), really resonates with me.

Setting Healthy Boundaries

‘Whoosh! Beep! Beep!’ A large bus speeds through an intersection in front of you, cars honk angrily, passers-by pause at the intersection. You are standing on a busy city street. Crowds of people rush past, in a hurry to get to their next meeting, catch their train, or pick up their children from school. Each person is moving through the crowd, darting a bench here, avoiding a stroller there. This crowd is made up of numerous distinct individuals. Despite the hustle and bustle, is very clear to see where one person ends and another begins. Now imagine what would happen if these lines were blurred, if one person’s arm melted into another’s backpack, or a group of friends standing close together began to morph into one being. How confusing everything would be! In reality we all have our own physical bodies, and there is no doubt about where we end and the person next to us begins. However, if we were to look into each individual’s private inner life, these boundaries would not be nearly as clear.

Benefits of Coloring (for Adults)

“Mommy Mommy! Look what I made!” an excited 5 year-old squeals, jumping up and down. She is holding up a piece of paper, covered with bright colors scribbled through the inky black contours of Mickey Mouse. Although this is far from a masterpiece, the child is giddy with excitement and the mother beams proudly at her.

Yoga and Mindfulness for Insomnia

Why do we sleep? Do we need more energy than food alone can provide? Or does sleep occur simply to facilitate restorative processes in the body? While there are numerous hypotheses surrounding this matter, one thing is for certain: people need sleep. When we are well-rested, we wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on whatever the day may bring. We are happier, more energetic, and much more productive. Even one night of poor sleep can throw our systems out of balance. Most modern adults can easily remember a sleepless night (either due to working late, studying, worrying, taking a red-eye flight across the globe, etc.) and how groggy they felt the next day. It is common to be familiar with such an experience, however when it becomes a consistent pattern, it can wreak havoc on our lives.

Happy Thanksgiving from Yogatailor!

What a beautiful time of year this is, with bright red and orange leaves on the trees, the fresh smell of rain, and the weather perfect for curling up in front of the fireplace. It is the time for food, warmth, and family. It is the time to reflect on the past year and realize how much we truly have and how wonderful that is. Luckily, there is so much to be grateful for this year: health, friends, pets, the internet, the opportunities the twenty-first century provides us with, and the fact that we are even alive!

This year we want to spread the joy and share what we here at Yogatailor are thankful for:

“I am grateful for my friend Prakhar, for giving me constant support, love, and confidence. Lots of love and thanks to him!”

-Apoorva

“I am thankful for my family, they have been there to love and support me through my lowest points and hardest times. They have loved me unconditionally and to the fullest. I am also thankful for the wonderful friends I have, both old and new-I am thankful for those who have become both a part of my life and a part of my family.”

-Kimberly

“I’m thankful for my family and friends! And also for cute animal instagrams that brighten my day.”

8 Ways to Stay Motivated to Exercise Through Winter

“Oh the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful…”

It’s that time of year again—cold winds, comfy sweaters, and peppermint coffee drinks at the local cafe. While this is all wonderful, it makes our couch seem much more appealing and trekking outside for a run or workout much more of a chore. So how do we get ourselves motivated to continue exercising and staying active? Here are 8 tips to get you up and running (no pun intended):

Mindfulness at Work

“There is so much to do!” “Work is crazy this week!” “I barely have time to breathe.”  We hear these phrases all too often . These days most everyone seems to be busy, tired, and running around all the time. And while it is truly wonderful that unemployment rates have been decreasing over the past few years, workplace stress has not.

Earlier this year, a study conducted by Nielson for Everest College found that 8 out of every 10 American workers are stressed out at work. This number has not changed much over recent years. Although we are no longer in a recession, many people have long commutes, heavy workloads, work long hours, or must deal with unpleasant coworkers, managers, and office politics. While there are many factors beyond our control (we cannot force our manager to hire an additional worker when shortstaffed, nor can we travel 35 miles in a few minutes), there are a number of things we can do to be less stressed and more focused at work. Here are a few techniques to help you recenter:

Beginner’s Guide to Essential Oils

With the weather changing and flu season around the corner, it is more important than ever to keep ourselves healthy and our immunity high. And while cough syrups and over-the-counter drugs are readily available, they often bring along a host of unattractive side effects. To avoid these, many people are turning to natural remedies, particularly essential oils.

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians were known to use these oils for their cosmetic and medicinal properties. Essential oils were also common in the Far East (China) and are mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments. Clearly, they have withstood the test of time. This is wonderful information to have, but you might be asking yourself, ‘What exactly are essential oils?
